Who ADAFZ fits — and who it does not

ADAFZ earns its keep only if your business physically touches an aircraft or air cargo. Maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) shops, ground-handling and aviation-service firms, freight forwarders and air-cargo consolidators, and aerospace or e-commerce operators that ship by air get real value from being airside at Zayed International. For them the airport adjacency is the product, not a line on a brochure.

If none of that describes you, ADAFZ is the wrong door. A consultancy, a holding company, a trading firm without air-freight volume, or a remote founder gains nothing from an airport perimeter and pays for a location advantage they will never use. Those businesses belong in a general-purpose zone with a flexi-desk option — ADAFZ requires a physical facility and is built around cargo and aircraft, not desks. Compare the free-zone route broadly before you commit to this one.

What the AED 15,000 licence covers — and what sits beyond it

The AED 15,000 headline in the spec table is the licence-from figure: it buys the trade licence itself, not the facility. ADAFZ requires a physical office or operational unit, so a warehouse, cargo unit, hangar space or office lease sits on top of the licence — and airport-side land is not priced like a business-park desk.

Beyond rent, budget for the usual free-zone layer: establishment card, immigration and e-channel registration, name reservation and per-visa costs. Aviation activities also carry an extra regulatory step most zones do not — covered in the next section. Model the full number, not the headline, before you commit. Our setup-cost calculator stacks licence, facility and visas into one figure.

Office, visas and aviation approvals

Office is mandatory here; there is no flexi-desk shortcut. That is deliberate — the zone exists to host physical aviation and logistics operations, and your leased space is what anchors both your licence and your visa capacity. The visa allocation is tied to the facility you take rather than a fixed small cap, so it scales with real space rather than a headcount ceiling.

If your activity is regulated aviation — MRO, ground handling, aircraft operations — the free-zone licence is necessary but not sufficient. Operators typically also need approval from the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) before they can work on aircraft. Treat the free-zone licence and the aviation regulator as two separate gates. A genuine physical presence here also supports corporate-tax substance if your qualifying income comes from logistics or aviation services.

ADAFZ vs KEZAD — choose by logistics mode

Both are Abu Dhabi industrial zones, but they serve different freight. ADAFZ is air: cargo, MRO and aviation services next to the runway. KEZAD is sea and land — manufacturing and warehousing at sovereign scale around Khalifa Port, with a lower licence-from and land pricing built for heavy industry.

If your goods move by air or you touch aircraft, ADAFZ wins. If they move by sea, or you manufacture and warehouse, KEZAD is cheaper and better placed.

Setting up in Abu Dhabi Airports Free Zone

01

Activity & name

Pick licensed activities and reserve a trade name. Activity choice drives approvals, banking and whether your income can be QFZP-qualifying.

02

Documents & KYC

Passports, application forms and a clean source-of-funds story. No local sponsor is needed — free zone companies are 100% foreign-owned.

03

Licence & establishment card

The zone issues your licence (typically 10–14 business days), then the immigration establishment card that unlocks visa processing.

04

Visas & bank account

Entry permit, medical, Emirates ID for each visa holder; corporate account opening runs in parallel — this is usually the slowest step.

Straight answers

Can I open a cheap flexi-desk or fully remote company at ADAFZ?
No. ADAFZ requires a physical office or operational unit — there is no flexi-desk tier. If you want a low-cost desk-only licence, a general-purpose free zone fits better; ADAFZ is built for businesses that need airport-side space.
Is the AED 15,000 the full cost of setting up at ADAFZ?
No. AED 15,000 is the licence-from figure. On top sit your facility lease (office, cargo unit or hangar), establishment card, immigration registration and per-visa costs. Airport-side space is priced above a standard business-park desk, so model the full number.
Do I need GCAA approval as well as the free-zone licence?
For regulated aviation work — MRO, ground handling, aircraft operations — yes. The free-zone licence lets you exist in the zone; the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority governs the aviation activity itself. Budget time for both gates.
How many visas can an ADAFZ company get?
The allocation is tied to the facility you lease rather than a fixed cap, so it scales with the space you take. A small office supports a small team; a warehouse or hangar supports more.
Is the “from AED 15,000” price real?
It is the official entry-tier licence figure (re-verified against the zone tariff before every update) — without visas, establishment card or add-ons. Our estimate above shows a realistic first-year floor; anything quoted below it usually hides a fee.
Can this company do business on the UAE mainland?
A free zone licence covers business inside the zone and abroad. Selling onshore generally needs a mainland distributor, a branch, or a dual-licence arrangement where offered — we flag which applies before you commit.
Does 0% corporate tax apply here?
Free zone companies pay 0% only on qualifying income under the QFZP regime — substance, audited accounts and de-minimis limits included. Otherwise the standard 9% above AED 375k applies. We model this in the corporate tax calculator.
